In this talk, Professor Alexander, one of the world’s leading social theorists, seeks to analyse the on-going conflict among the dominant majority groups in Europe over how immigrant groups, particularly Muslims, should be incorporated into the civil sphere. Alexander is particularly concerned with shedding light on the growing antipathy to multiculturalism.
Jeffrey C. Alexander is the Lillian Chavenson Saden Professor of Sociology at Yale University and Co-Director, Center for Cultural Sociology. He is one of the world’s most prominent social theorists and a leading proponent of meaning-centred analysis in the social sciences. Recent books include: Trauma: A Social Theory (Polity, 2012); The Performance of Politics: Obama’s Victory and the Democratic Struggle for Power (Oxford, 2010) and The Civil Sphere (Oxford, 2006), which considers gender, race and religion, as well as new theorizing about social movements and incorporation.
